Hippolyte “FranJou” Moreau (1832-1927) was a part of the Moreau dynasty of artists. He was trained by his father, the renowned Jean-Baptiste Moreau, and studied and worked with François Jouffroy. Between 1863-1914, Moreau regularly exhibited his work at the Salon of French Artists. He also won awards for his sculptures at Paris’ Universal Exposition in both 1878 and 1900.
Moreau was particularly known for his bronzes of maidens, neo-classical forms, and his hunting scenes. Dogs, and especially bulldogs were a favourite of his and were produced in several variations; these are a very desirable version with clear Art Deco influence and strong Cubist lines.
